At breaking point

After we disembarked, we let the spaceship behind us and walked up a small rise. As we looked out over the landscape, a bright point of light rapidly came down from the sky and plummeted behind the hills on the other side of the lake. Almost immediately, the air above the mountains fluctuated as a short but powerful shockwave indicated the start of the explosion. Then there came an unbelievably bright light and it seemed as if time slowed down as the light twisted and swirled, finding its way through the mountains, flowing like water. We had known from the beginning that there was no escape and we held each other as the light engulfed us.
